Kyra L. was born in South Carolina, but she really moved around a lot and made her way to Taos. Kyra was the winner of The Hum Magazine article submission. Kyra wrote an article about a black LGBTQ artist, Nikesha Breeze, because she felt that the story was really inspiring. Nikesha Breeze has many indigenous roots and showcases how her ancestors were slaves, and now she's trying to find justice for them.Among the artist's unique touch in her work, Nikesha is also a part of the LGBTQ community. These are some of the reasons why Kyra decided to write an article about the artist in question.
What Kyra Learned from Interviewing Nikesha
From her experience in interviewing Nikesha, Kyras was intrigued by Nikesha's afro future mystic culture. According to Kyra, this was really cool because she witnessed Nikesha play around with time.Hence, Kyra learned that you can make everything you want and, at the same time, change what doesn't appeal to you.
What Kyra Took from the Article
Kyra captured a lot about Nikesha throughout the entire interview. However, only one aspect about Nikesha really stood out during the interview. She (Nikesha) mainly addressed the color issue and all the injustices witnessed on people of color. Kyra, who is relatively young, didn't fully understand what Nikesha really meant concerning the whole color issue. But she hopes it will make more sense to her as she grows to be an adult. Kyra also learned that she should be confident in her skin color and show off her beauty regardless of how others may respond to her actions.
Kyra's Experience with Racism
Kyra has experienced some racial inequality at a younger age. She attended a school where she was the only person of color. In that school, her peers were really rude to her and expressed some racial prejudice towards her.To Kyra, Nikesha was an inspiration, and she decided it was a good idea to speak to such a character for her interview. Kyra better understands her own uniqueness.
Kyra's Future Plans
In the future, Kyra plans to do more projects. This is because she's noticed that the words of young people aren't being taken as seriously as they should. So, Kyra has the vision to fix that into something better. To achieve this, Kyra plans to go out and meet with more people with bigger influence in their space. She's learned a lot from interviewing people from the same ethnic background, and Kyra describes this as a blessing to her.
What Kyra Enjoys About Herself
In her time, Kyra really enjoys doing art and sharing it with others to hear their opinions on her work. She's also a problem solver and loves helping her friends through their problems that they find hard to tackle by themselves.
Kyra's Positive Message to Women of Color
To other women of color, Kyra feels that they shouldn't be afraid to show who they are, and they should always chase their dreams no matter the obstacles.
